Ten Minutes of Nature at Any Age

The benefits of nature at any age My mom has had this quote from Mark Twain on her wall ever since I was small: “Age is a matter of the mind. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” As I continue to age myself, I of course appreciate that quote

How to Spend More Time in Nature

Want to spend more time in nature? Start small. I spoke to a woman yesterday who said, “I want to spend more time in nature, but I don’t know where to begin.” I think many people can relate to her experience, and many factors can contribute to us not pursuing

    Your Wild Life Wednesday

Discover Your Wild Life  Welcome to your wild life. Part of our mission is to help adults reconnect with the sense of awe and adventure they felt as children, and I can think of no better way to do that than to explore nature in all its glory.  Oh, Wednesday

The annual wreath tradition continues. Each year, The annual wreath tradition continues. Each year, we cut down our own tree in national forest land and I use the trimmings to make a wreath.

This year, I had been putting it off as yet another "chore," but when I plopped myself down on the floor and started snipping boughs, I remembered why I do it.

Creating something rustic and wild with natural materials is soothing and centering. As usual, the end result is beautifully imperfect.

I normally add a little red bird in a scarf, but it was too much red, so the crazy owl gets a star role this year.

Our pup was annoyed that I chose to work on this project rather than feed her, but she survived. 😁

You don't have to be flashy to stand out. This ti You don't have to be flashy to stand out.

This time of year, you will see bright red birds on holiday decorations and cards. Usually cardinals. Yes, they are gorgeous birds and look kind of amazing against the snow and evergreens.

But I live outside of cardinals' typical range. So, they are not an accurate depiction of Colorado winter for me.

Dark-eyed Juncos, on the other hand? Oh, yes. They are only at my low foothills elevations in winter. They have different coloring and patterns depending on their subspecies (pink-sided and slate subspecies depicted here). They travel in groups, chatter to each other almost constantly and feast and forage in and under shrubs. It's like a huge family holiday celebration.

Similarly, some humans prefer more subdued colors and behavior, and they prefer to avoid the spotlight and seek the company of a few trusted family and friends. They may shy away from social media and selfies. Yet just because they are quietly going about their business doesn't mean they don't matter or contribute.

If you are one of those humans (hint: so am I), I see you. Especially this time of year, the pressure to do it all and be fabulous can be ... a lot. You just be you.

This pretty Solitaire would like to remind you to This pretty Solitaire would like to remind you to take time for you this season.

Stop. Eat a few berries. Call a friend or two. Rest.

This one called out to two other friends nearby, but was content to just hang out on this branch for several minutes, enjoying the view.

Learn from nature.
